Guest Lecture by Mrs Pranjali Deshpande-Agashe, Program Manager (Maharashtra), ITDP

Topic : Techno-Commercial aspects of Bus Rapid Transit Systems (BRTS)

On 22nd November, Mrs Pranjali Deshpande-Agashe, Program Manager (Maharashtra), Institute for Transportation & Development Policy, visited SCMHRD campus. She completed her undergraduate studies in architecture at Bharatiya Kala Prasarini Sabha’s College of Architecture in Pune, and earned a master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from CEPT University, with a thesis on transportation sector finance in Pune.

The session started with a presentation, explaining the transport scenario in India today and how we need sustainable alternatives to address the issues. This led to a comparative study of all modes of transport and BRTS emerged as a clear winner with financial, commercial, social and aesthetic viability. The discussion then went on to shed light on the various aspects of a BRTS. A case-based analysis of existing BRTS systems in place in India helped us understand the causes of failures of some projects and causes of success of Janmarg in Gujarat.

A movie clip was later shown which showed the kind of branding exercises that are required for the success of BRTS.

The entire session was interactive and made everyone realize the importance of BRTS in India. The students and the faculty alike found it a highly useful session enriched with the nuggets of her experience from which we had a lot to learn.
