Programme Details & Learning Objectives

Course Commencement: July 2008

12-month program consisting of 2 Semesters (13 Courses, 30 Credits)

6 courses in Semester I & 7 courses in Semester II

Each Semester is of 24 weeks + 1 week of exams

Classes to be held 3 days a week

Each course meets 1.5 hours per week

Program Timings: 7.00 pm – 10.30 pm

PGDF Fees: Rs. 100,000 per student + Dinner Expenses

Eligibility : Graduates with a minimum of two years of work-experience

This PGDF program is meant for executives already working in Finance/Accounting function (not being MBAs) as well as those who aspire to work in Finance function in near future having either accounting, economics, science or engineering background.

It shall be concerned with financial decision-making and financial instruments and markets. Students shall learn how to apply economic and financial theory to obtain solutions to financial problems, such as choosing among alternative investment projects and evaluating proposed investment strategies. Courses shall focus on managing investment portfolios and corporate finance. This PGDF program shall prepare students for careers in corporate finance and treasury management, investment banking, commercial banking, insurance, asset management & portfolio management. It shall be designed to provide students with advanced skills in applied finance required in today’s competitive financial environment.

ACADEMIC CURRICULUM

Semester I

Financial Accounting (2 Credits)

An introduction to basic financial accounting topics: GAAP & accounting conventions (Matching, Consistency, Conservatism, Going concern, Revenue recognition etc.), major financial statements (Balance sheet, Profit & Loss account & Cash flow statement), accrual accounting, financial reporting alternatives, financial statement analysis and other related areas.

Managerial Accounting (2 Credits)

An introduction to basic managerial accounting topics: cost behavior, cost systems & concepts, short and long term decision-making, product costing, activity-based costing, marginal costing & break-even analysis, standard costing & variance analysis and business planning & budgeting.

Financial Management (3 Credits)

An introduction to the basic concepts and practices used by managers in making financial decisions. Topics include cash flow analysis, time value of money, capital budgeting, risk & return, valuation of securities, short- and long-term financial planning, cost of capital, financial leverage, dividend policy, working capital management etc.

Managerial Economics (3 Credits)

An introduction to basic micro & macro economic concepts & topics: demand & supply, the supply decision, market structures, macro-economic problems, money, income & interest rates, fiscal policy, international linkages, balance of payments etc.

Capital and Money Markets (3 Credits)

This course aims at providing students with an understanding of economy-industry-company analysis and various inter linkages that influence the capital & Money market, providing deep insights into capital market operations, constituents and their functions etc.

Commercial Banking & Financial Services (2 Credits)

This course is intended to provide an insight into the Fundamentals of Commercial banking and evolution of commercial banking in India. Also, aiming to understand & analyze various concepts in commercial banking sector including Basel II norms.

Semester II

Corporate Finance - Theory & Practice (2 Credits)

This course builds on the introduction to financial management presented in the core course. Topics include estimating cash flows, capital budgeting under uncertainty, raising debt and equity capital, financial restructuring, financial risk management, mergers & acquisitions etc.

Securities Analysis & Portfolio Management (2 Credits)

The course aims to build an understanding of the various aspects of risks in Securities, Debt, Equity and Synthetics. Besides it will provide an understanding of the various investment techniques that can be used to manage a portfolio. The conceptual inputs will assist the students to understand the risk and returns involved in different investments and how to make a portfolio, which could generate good returns. In course of their learning, students will develop the ability to understand the issues faced by financial institutions like Insurance Companies, Mutual Funds, Banks etc. in terms of investment risks involved in their operations. The inputs given would eventually improve student understanding of risks faced by various financial institutions in their investment decisions.

Financial Statement Analysis (3 Credits)

Financial Statement Analysis is intended for those students, such as finance and financial markets majors, who are interested in developing more expertise in the financial accounting area. Students who envision themselves using financial statements as inputs for investment, credit and other decisions should also benefit from this course. This course begins with a review of the basic financial statements and proceeds to traditional ratio analysis. From there the course examines specific topics that are important to financial statement users: inventories, long-lived fixed assets, income taxes, financing liabilities etc. through extensive use of HBS case studies. The objective of this course is to expand upon the financial accounting foundation that was developed in the core course. The major emphasis will be on understanding the more common disclosures that GAAP requires of public companies and the choices that companies have among competing principles.

Investment Banking & Financial Services (2 Credits)

This course aims to provide deep insights into concept, scope & characteristics of investment banking, distinction with merchant banking, regulation & structure of merchant banking industry, underwriting, book building process, IPO pricing, private placements, valuation techniques for M&As, and complex structure of financial services.

International Finance (2 Credits)

This course exposes students to global financial markets, instruments and various strategies of hedging for maximization of shareholders wealth. It extends to understanding of quantitative tools, which will make the students competent to adapt the role & potential of a dealing room and help in grooming their negotiating skills in the international markets. The course would enable students to develop ability to work on financial strategies in the foreign exchange markets and eventually relate financial and exchange fluctuations with operational activities of business.

Models for Decision Making Using Spreadsheets (2 Credits)

Spreadsheets are a popular model-building environment and decision aids for managers. Add-ins and enhancements have made powerful decision-making tools available to the manager. This course covers how to use the spreadsheet to develop and utilize some of these decision-making aids. Topics include pivot tables (useful for analyzing data sets, e.g. market research survey information), data tables (useful for performing what-if? analyses), forecasting using regression, time series forecasting methods, using goal seek, using SOLVER to optimize decision models, probabilistic simulation using @RISK and decision trees. Also, we discuss the use of array functions and graphing along with trend line curve fitting. Finance is the functional field used to illustrate many of the spreadsheet modeling applications.

Financial Risk Management (2 Credits)

This course will study the relevant approaches to risk management, the regulatory initiatives towards Value-at-Risk (VaR), and how to develop and implement a VaR system. Students will learn how to use VaR to assess the various risks confronting trading operations of hedge funds, banks and other institutions with exposure to market risk. Estimations of risk will be calculated for portfolios containing a variety of financial instruments. This course shall also focus on Commodities & their Derivatives (Options, Futures). It shall also touch base on insurance as a tool to mitigate financial risks.
